What the Noise Usually Means
- Squeaking or squealing: dry rollers, hinges or spring bearings.
- Grinding: rollers with worn bearings, or a cable rubbing its drum.
- Popping or snapping: a dented section or bent track pulling the sections out of line.
- Rattling: loose bolts on the hinges or track.
- Chain slap: a loose chain on an older chain drive opener.
- Humming with no movement: an opener with stripped gears. See opener repair.
What You Can Do Yourself
Lubricating is a safe homeowner job. Use a spray made for garage doors, not heavy grease.
With the door closed and the opener unplugged, spray the hinges, the roller stems and the bearings at each end of the spring bar. A light coat on the spring coils helps too. Skip the inside of the tracks; grease there collects grit.
Run the door a few times. If the squeal fades, that was it.
Don't touch the springs beyond a light spray, and don't loosen anything near the cables.
When Parts Need Replacing
Old plastic rollers flatten, crack and lose their wheels. Sealed bearing nylon rollers cost a bit more and make a big difference in noise.
Hinges wear oval holes and start to wobble. A cracked hinge can let a section shift, which is a safety issue on its own.
A technician can replace rollers and hinges in one visit, then tighten, balance and adjust the whole door.
Why Doors Get Loud Faster Here
Humidity and salt dry out lubricant and rust the moving parts. Doors close to Pensacola Bay or the beach tend to need lubricant more often than once a year.
Rust is also why a squeak can turn into a grind quickly. See rust on springs and hardware for what salt air does.
Noises That Mean Stop
A sudden loud bang, a door that now feels heavy, or a cable that looks frayed are not noise problems. Those are spring and cable problems, and running the door makes them worse.
Leave it closed and read about a broken spring before you touch anything.
Quieter Options
If the opener itself is the loud part, a belt drive opener is far quieter than chain. It's worth it when a bedroom sits over the garage. See opener replacement.
An insulated door also runs quieter because the panels don't drum. See insulated doors.
